You can dilute it with ice cold water till the flask is full. Remove the lower layer completely by siphoning. A major part of the ether can be removed through the process of decantation and separate the remaining using a separatory funnel.
In the same manner, extract the aqueous layer two times with 500 cc portions of ether after which you can discard the ether extracts.
You can remove the remaining ether in the aqueous layer at reduced pressure by using a suction pump to suck air through the solution for an hour. Precipitate the α-Phenylacetoacetonitrile by adding 60cc of glacial acetic acid.
In case oil is thrown out, place the flask in the ice bath till the precipitate is crystalline. Use suction filtration for separating the crystals and washing it four times in a funnel with 50cc of water. In dry condition, the tan-coloured substance has a weight of 50-55g which has a melting point of 83–86°. Then dissolve it in the methyl alcohol mother liquors from the crystallization of the first lot. The resulting solution is boiled with a small amount of Norite. It is filtered and cooled to −10°. Collect the crystals which are formed using a filter and wash them with 10cc of cold methyl alcohol, after which it has to be dired. Then a 43-48 gram substance is obtained having a pale straw colour with a melting point of 87–89°. It is recrystallized from 25cc pure methyl alcohol, which is washed using 10cc of cold methyl alcohol. A 37–41 g substance is obtained with a melting point of 88.5–89.5°. This yields a total material of this much purity of 210–232 g which is 66–73% of the theoretical amount.
